CCP Cine Icons Pays Tribute to National Artist Eddie Romero on His 100th Birth Anniversary with Premiere of ‘Aguila’

Celebrating its first anniversary milestone, CCP Cine Icons proudly presents the much-anticipated classic Filipino film ‘Aguila’, written and directed by National Artist Eddie Romero, and featuring the iconic Fernando Poe Jr. The premiere is scheduled for April 3 at 1PM at the GSIS Theater, followed by a talkback session.

This special screening, free and open to the public, commemorates Romero’s centennial birth anniversary. Renowned as a film director, producer, and screenwriter, Romero was honored as a National Artist in 2003 for his profound contributions to Philippine cinema. His body of work delves into the nation’s history and politics, with notable films including ‘Ganito Kami Noon…Paano Kayo Ngayon?’, ‘Kamakalawa’, and ‘Banta ng Kahapon’. Romero also earned acclaim for his war films such as ‘Lost Battalion’ (1960), ‘The Raiders of Leyte Gulf’ (1963), and ‘The Walls of Hell’ (1964).

‘Aguila’, a 1980 Philippine period drama, chronicles the intertwined narratives of the Aguila family and the nation’s history through flashbacks, centering on the life of the elderly Daniel Aguila. The film explores themes of family, history, society, and nationalism, making it a monumental achievement in Filipino cinema. ‘Aguila’ garnered numerous accolades, including six wins at the 1981 FAMAS Awards and nine nominations at the 1981 Gawad Urian Awards, cementing its place in local movie history.

Launched in 2023, CCP Cine Icons, a special program of the CCP Film, Broadcast, and New Media Division-Production and Exhibition Department (FBNMD-PED), is dedicated to honoring and promoting the legacy of National Artists and Gawad CCP Para sa Sining awardees.
