Beware! A sunny play about gloomy people and why licking postage stamps is a thing in the past

This is what happens when you tossed Anton Chekov’s characters in a blender – an impeccable and totally hilarious play.

And who is Chekov? Oh well, never mind if you have no knowledge of the classics as you can relate emotionally.

Repertory Philippines, more popularly known as REP, starts off its 50th year line-up beginning with 2013 Tony Awards Best Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.

Cleverly written by Christopher Durang that mixes Russian playwright Anton Chekov’s characters, REP’s own version is definitely something to look forward to with veteran actor and director Bart Guingona directing the production. Just yay! for local productions.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike tells the story of three siblings – named after Chekov characters by their academic parents, and who are all living their namesakes’ unhappiness. The character Vanya is played by REP veteran theater actor and director Michael Williams. Williams delivers a 6-pager monologue flawlessly with conviction in one of the scenes when he caught the sexy boy toy Spike (played by Joaquin Valdes) inattentively watching the play while browsing his phone. The enraged Vanya just lectured Spike that during his time, multitasking is a no-no and that they do things one at a time. They lick postage stamps and that’s the thing in the past. Vanya doesn’t like change and he misses everything in the past. Today, social media, video games, and even the climate have changed.

Rivalry, revenge, and regret. The three siblings as they soon realize that they can all hope and always hope while listening to the Beatles’ Here Comes the Sun. (photo by REP)

Vanya together with his sister Sonia (who happens to be adopted) never left the confines of their childhood home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Bitterly they complain about their uneventful lives, lost dreams and missed opportunities while they witness the glamorous escapades of their more successful movie star sister, Masha, played by the highly acclaimed stage and television actress Cherie Gil.

Watching Cherie Gil as Masha is like watching Cherie Gil still. Glamorously, she carries the role effortlessly and yes, she can do comedy!

The cast also includes REP veterans Naths Everett as the fortune-telling maid, Cassandra and Mica Pineda as Nina whom you will never forget as the girl who played Molecule for Vanya’s unpublished play.

The view from where I sit.

Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is funny and quietly poignant and glamorous and can stimulate your mind.

Catch Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike from January 20 to February 12 at the Onstage Theater in Greenbelt 1, Makati City.
